One Hour Escape

Published: April 10, 2010

[written from prison]

There are very few things
more pathetic
than watching a man
anticipating a visit
that never happens
the labors of sadness begin
when he doesn’t make first call
he goes far out of character
he makes me uncomfortable
all pacing back and forth
in front of the sally port
his focus is on nothing
but the clock
and every time the phone rings
he tries to be inconspicuous
in his hoping
but he stands out like a cop.
So sad is this man!
When he is not chosen
on second call
his legs and emotional
reserves give way
he uses a wall as support
the feeling of betrayal
descends upon him
how bad he is truly hurt
is told only by the glassy eyes
but I will never see him cry
because I don’t want anyone
to know just how lonely am I
or how bad I want that
one hour escape…
